This is a shot from my film days. I was in Broome (North west Western Australia) wandering along the shore when I spotted these four boys playing on a rusted old fishing boat sitting high and dry above the mangroves. Their innocence and happiness made me wonder why so many of the adults in their families were lost to alcohol spending the days in the parks of this beautiful Australian country town.
Since then I have learned a lot more about the
human rights abuses that are their legacy. And, even more shockingly, the
human rights abuses that they live with here and now!
While I spend much of my time trying to repair the damage done by white settlers to the indiginous animal populations of this country, if I had one wish, it would be to somehow heal all the hurt and misunderstanding experienced by the indiginous people of this country.
But I am a realist, even if I had great resources at my disposal, which I don't, I know such healing is an all but impossible task.
So long as I can find;
- the courage to change the things I can change
- the grace to accept the things I cannot change
- and the wisdom to be able to tell the difference
then my life will continue to have meaning.
