This is the wonderful chuditch - or western quoll, or even western native cat (they are now extinct in the Eastern States. You probably won't be surprised to learn it isn't a cat. Nor is a koala a bear. Shocking, hey? I've only ever seen quite small chuditches (I'm guessing that's the plural) and this guy was no exception. As she woke up from an anaesthetic I had an opportunity to get closer than I ever have before to one of these creatures. Biggest threats to their existence? Cats and foxes :( Gary Beilby is a Perth mobile vet who sees a range of wildlife including marsupials.
