There are a number of different species of spiny-tailed skink in Western Australia - with a new species; the Pilbara spiny-tailed skink being discovered just this year. This one is the endangered Western (Egernia stokesii badia) - they have suffered massive reductions in their range across the Northern Wheatbelt, and Dirk Hartog Island, just off Shark Bay, is pretty much their only safe refuge.
