Odd and stumpy on land, but soaringly graceful in flight, the Australian pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus) is indeed a conspicuous beast. They are an almost iconic part of the Swan Coastal Plain, and are found in most parts of Australia. And despite having stunning flight range they follow no particular migratory patterns - instead just choosing to go wherever the fish party is the best. As a result they seem to have coped with our intrusions better than most. This lovely lady was sitting atop a solitary pole in the boat harbour at Rottnest. She studied me as long as I studied her.
