WA’s Senior Australian of the Year, June Butcher is a remarkable woman. Nearly 25 years ago, with the help of her late husband, the ex-nurse decided to start caring for injured and sick wildlife from her home. Responding to a clear demand, she treated some 70 animals in the first year alone. Last year the figure topped 2000. Today the Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is an internationally respected powerhouse of science, research, community involvement and environmental education. She is pictured here with Henry, a Red-tailed Black Cockatoo who has been part of the team of education animals for many years.
